Italian American League,
Serving the Brooklyn Community Since 1975
Purpose and Mission
The Italian American Civil Rights League has as its purpose the enhancement of services to youth and families in the community and the promotion of neighborhood harmony, stability, and quality of life. Through academic and social self development, leadership opportunities, volunteer service, and employment, the Italian American League has worked in the community for over 30 years to inspire people, young and old, to take action to help make their communities stronger and more compassionate!
Our History
The IACRL has a proven record of successfully providing quality programming services to the community for over 35 years. Founded in 1975 as an agency to fight discrimination against Italian Americans, the Italian American League (also know as IACRL) has evolved to become one of the oldest sites for community based education and employment services in the East New York and Canarsie area.
Our Summer Youth Employment Program, also begun in 1975, has serviced thousands of city youth over the years, giving them invaluable "real life" working experiences. Recently, in an effort to make our programs more inclusive and to ensure that youth with disabilities recieve the same experiences, we have linked with the NYC Department of Education Special Education Program to provide jobs for youth who might otherwise be left out or overlooked.
Over the years, the IACRL has given much enjoyment and assistance to its community. We brought disadvantaged children toys from Santa, and took inner city youth to basketball games, baseball games, and Broadway plays. We gave Christmas trees to many local churches, precincts, and schools, and gave clothes and food to those in need. Of course, all of these services were provided free of charge!
Today, we proudly continue this tradition of service to our community through our programs for youth and young adults ages 14 to 24 years old. See our programs link for more details about each program.
